Background music, or music for dancing? Or both?

The Jazz Reporters are available in a large number of different configurations to suit all situations. The first decesion to make is if you would like a band with a singer, or if you would prefer an instrumental ensemble. To summarise our advice on this:

  • Instrumental ensembles are ideal for background music.
  • Vocal-led ensembles are preferable if the music is to be more of a feature or if dancing is to be involved.

Drums or no drums?

  • All of our ensembles are available without drums.
  • This is useful if space is particularly limited or volume is of particular concern.
  • We would strongly recommend that drums would be included if the music is to be danced to.
  • Do not presume that drums mean the music will be very loud - all of our musicians are very sensitive in adjusting their volume appropriately for any situation.

Rather than listing all the various possible combinations, on our contact page you have the option to select any instruments (or voices) you would particularly like to be included in the band.

Do not worry about specifiying every instrument in the band if you are not sure about what would have to be included - again, we can advise on this!

How many musicians?

  • Our smallest ensemble would be an instrumental duo of guitar or piano with bass. This combination would be excellent for providing atmospheric background music in a restaurant or bar, or during a meal or drinks reception at a private event.
  • A 3rd musician can be added depending on your musical tastes and budget. Many people favour the sound of a saxophone, or you may prefer to add a trumpet, vocalist, guitar or drums.
  • 4 musicians would be our recommended minimum if you wish to dance to the band. This would include a singer (your preference of male or female) with bass, drums, and your preference of guitar or piano.
  • 4 piece instrumental ensembles are also excellent for background music. They would typically include sax or trumpet, guitar or piano, bass and drums.
  • Sax, trumpet and / or guitar can be added to a vocal ensemble, again depending on your musical tastes and budget. Size of venue and number of guests is also worth considering - we can advise!
  • For the full Jazz Reporters experience - have the lot! A full 7 piece band (or 8 piece if you wish to include both vocalists) would be a spectacular addition to your special occasion, and would create an energy and atmosphere that would bring your party to life and your guests to the dance floor!
